Like so many of our bodies systems, the immune system in wonderfully complex and intricately interactive, functionally protecting us from infection, disease and cancer. It’s primary components are composed of merging spheres of response, orchestrating automatic signals between; cells, organs, proteins, glands, bone marrow, blood, lymph, reactive actions, and physical, chemical, and biological barriers. 

As our immune system functions within the intersection of its two principle parameters of response - innate and adaptive immunity - we witness a display of memory for past events which helps activate the systems precision. Concurrently operating, is a cellular consciousness that has the ability to differentiate between all foreign substances, including bacteria, viruses, pathogens antigens, and cancer cells, from the normal cells of the body.

Detection

Tiny particles that measure microRNA levels in tissue samples could help diagnose and monitor many diseases.

About 10 years ago, scientists discovered a new type of genetic material called microRNA, which appears to turn genes on or off inside a cell. More recently, they found that these genetic snippets often go haywire in cancer cells, contributing to tumors’ uncontrollable growth.

A team of researchers at MIT has now engineered a way to detect abnormal microRNA levels in the blood of cancer patients, raising the possibility of developing a simple blood test to diagnose or monitor the disease.

Over the next few months we will introduce five abbreviated articles concerning the function of the immune system.

• They will consist of firstly, a description and overview of the system.
• Secondly, a determination of the quality of the immune system through a variety of different blood panels, then reading the results and modifying the specific needs of an individual to attain an optimal level of immune function with particular emphasis on the role of inflammation.
• The third article will consist of a panoply of methods and substances to help boost the immune systems various components, paying attention to the effects of lowering or heightening our immune system through emotions, thoughts and actions.
• Our intentions for the fourth article will introduce the science of  immunotherapy, particularly as it relates to cancer. It is the purpose of this approach to free up the self healing mechanisms of the immune system in order to show that an optimally functioning immune system is powerful enough and adequately suited to deal with and defeat a serious disease.
• Rounding out our informational monograms, we will highlight the natural substances such as nutraceuticals and supplementations which strengthen the immune system, giving particular emphasis to special areas such as probiotics, minerals from sea vegetables and healing foods.

The Cancer Advisory Panel on Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAPCAM) studied the cases of six cancer patients, presented by the Kushi Institute to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The meeting was held on February 25, 2002, at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to which CAPCAM belongs. NCI is a division of NIH and is the U.S. Government’s main agency for research and information about cancer. The NCI states it “. . . will support rigorous scientific investigation of approaches with positive Best Case Series reviews.” The outcome of this historic event is overwhelmingly positive for the Kushi Institute and the macrobiotic movement in general.
